Myrtle Beach Golf named #1 in quality and value

Myrtle Beach Golf received some good news according to a recent report. A survey conducted by the National Golf Foundation ranks the Myrtle Beach-area number one for quality and value in its golf courses.

Barefoot Resort was called out in the article. The courses are improving after a few tough years according to several pros. Barefoot consists of 4 courses, each one having unique challenges with meticulously manicured fairways and greens making them very pleasant to play.

Snake, Wolf & other games for the course

It goes without saying that when it comes to golfing with your buddies there are always side bets, games, and other shananigans that go on during the round. So to bring you into 2011 while your thinking about your next Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation, here are a couple ideas for games you may or may not have heard of.

SNAKE:

Snake is a putting game. It’s great when you have a foursome because while you may be playing twosomes against each other on another bet, this game is one for all and can really make the 18th hole interesting even if one pair is crushing the other. At the beginning of the round, all players in the foursome agree on the bet amount. Whoever three-putts first gets and keeps the ‘snake’ until someone else three-putts, then it changes owner to that golfer … and so on. Whoever is the last with the snake pays the other players in the foursome the agreed amount.

WOLF:

Wolf is good if most (probably all) golfers are on par with each other. It can suck if one in the foursome is significantly better than the other three but hey, it’s golf, we all suck at one time or another. It does make for a fun round if you can’t decide on teams or just feel like trying something different. The wolf rotates each hole. When the first golfer tees off, the wolf can decide whether or not to take that golfer as their partner for the hole. When the second golfer tees off, the wolf can no longer pick the first golfer and decides if the second golfer is their partner. So one for the third. The wolf makes a decision at this point whether to pick the third person as their partner or to go it alone as the lone wolf.

The wolf tees off last. If the wolf picks a partner, the wolf and the partner must beat the other two players to win the hole otherwise the other pair win the hole. Tie and the wolf loses. If the wolf decides to be the lone wolf, the wolf’s score must beat, no ties, all the other players to win the hole, otherwise the other three win the hole.

Keep track of the winner(s) on each hole and add up at the points at the end. The player with the most points is the Lone Wolf winner.

BARKIES:

Barkies are paid automatically to any player who makes par on a hole on which he hit a tree. The value of a Barkie is determined before the round.

GRUESOMES:

Gruesomes is a betting game that pits 2-person teams against each other. Both team members tee off, then the other teams gets to choose which of the drives your side has to play. Obviously, they’ll choose the worst – or most gruesome – of the two drives. Bet per hole.

There are hundreds more and we would love to hear what you find to be most entertaining. Drop a comment and let us know. Spring is right around the corner and a Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation awaits your next choice on a game for the course.

Have a safe and Happy New Year from all of us at Golf Trek. We look forward to a great golfing year in 2011.

Farmstead Golf Links Named to Most Fun List

**CALABASH, NC – The 18th hole at Farmstead Golf Links has been selected by Golf Digest in its dream design “Top 18 Most Fun Holes in America” as published on line and in the magazine’s print edition for December 2010. Farmstead joined some of the country’s top ranking courses in being selected for the honor.  The field included two courses ranked in the country’s top 10 by Golf Digest, three ranked in the top 25, two best new courses, two top 10 hardest and one designated by the magazine as the best new course for the 21st century. While most of the honored courses were in the western part of the country, one Sanford NC course joined Farmstead.
Farmstead’s signature hole #18 is a par six, 767 yard hole that tees off in South Carolina and finishes in North Carolina alongside the course’s grand 8,000sf Georgian style clubhouse. The course’s total yardage is 7242. It has a slope of 135 and rating of 74.5.

Farmstead was a finalist for Best New Golf Course in North Carolina in 2002. It was designed by Willard Byrd and David Johnson and is managed by Burroughs and Chapin Golf Management. Its sister course, Meadowlands Golf Club, opened in 1997 and was named to the Top 100 Golf Courses for Women by Golf for Women Magazine.

Myrtle Beach Golf Course Aerification

Most Avid golfers are always interested in aerification, or the process in which golf courses aerate their greens.  Even with a golf course being in the best possible condition, aerification is necessary to preserve the conditions of the greens.

Typically golf courses in Myrtle Beach aerify Spring and fall to ensure healthy turf conditions.  By punching holes in the greens, in sizes varying from a dime to a quarter, it enables the overall health of the putting surface.  It prevents compaction and enables the greens to be soft and forgiving.  It also promotes healthier root growth, which makes it more drought and heat resistant.  The 3rd thing aerification does is allow water penetration.

While it’s no fun to play on greens that have been recently aerified, it necessary to keep the golf course up.  Your Golfmasters here at Golf Trek are constantly on top of Myrtle Beach golf course conditions so that we can ensure our customers do NOT play courses that have recently been aerated.  Fortunately most golf courses in the myrtle beach area schedule their aerification around non peak golf periods.  This minimizes the impact on the traveling golfer.

Here is a very interested video put out by the Pearl golf course about how they go about the aerification process.  I hope you enjoy.  The Pearl definitely is a course you should check out next time you are planning a trip to Myrtle Beach.

Have you seen one of these on the Golf Course?

This picture was not taken in Myrtle Beach, however Horry County (Myrtle Beach Metro Area) does have the largest Brown Bear Population in the state. Not that any of your golfmasters have seen a bear on the golf course.  We do have a golf course by the name Black Bear here in Myrtle Beach.

Unfortunately the guy forgot to mark his golf ball. What was he thinking?

Clean Golf Humor

You’ve got to appreciate some clean, but really funny golf humor!  Enjoy.

Myrtle Beach Golf Course Covered in Snow

With the crazy weather patterns everyone has been having, I thought everyone would be interested to see what a golf course in Myrtle Beach looks like with a light covering in snow.

Our friends at Crow Creek, were kind enough to share it with us.  While the snow didn’t last for long, and we are now experiencing sunny days with a warming trend close to 60, it was entertaining to see snow in South Carolina.  It only happens once every 10 years or so, and that happened to be this past Friday.

Myrtle Beach’s Pearl Golf Course Upgrades

The Pearl golf course has been making news with renovations to continually upgrade the course.  As part of their continued investment in the course they will have brand new granite tee signs, as well as 3D Yardage books.  The books are for sale at a nominal price, but are completely updated based on the latest changes at the course.

They also added a flyover of each hole on their website.  3d Flyover East Course and 3d flyover west course

Here is a picture to give you an idea.
