When it comes to golfing, proper ball striking and contact are of paramount importance if you want to lower your score. Much of your ability to make solid contact and connect with power depends on your ability to maintain proper posture through your swing. Here is a great article from Golf Digest describing how your hamstrings and posture will influence your ability to generate solid contact:

One of golf’s most common swing flaws is failing to maintain the posture created at address. Many amateurs rise out of their stance as they swing the club down from the top, and this causes them to make poor contact with the ball. Fat and thin shots are a typical result.

Golf instructors will often try to fix this issue with various drills that help keep students from “standing up” when they swing down and through the impact zone. An example would be to hold a golf shaft just over a student’s head and have the student make swings trying not to bump the shaft. Another would be to the student maintain the knee flex created at address.

Both are effective, and often a golfer with this stand-up problem will immediately start hitting solid shots after using these drills. The teacher and student shake hands and go on their merry ways. Problem solved, right?

Not always.

It’s easy to correct this problem for a swing or two, or even half a round. But without strong, flexible hamstrings (the muscles on the back of your thighs), the problem will come back;

especially after fatigue sets in. Your hamstrings help support the body while you swing. Wherever you are right now, get into your address posture and then feel the back of your legs. If you can’t feel your hamstring muscles working to hold that posture, you’re probably going to struggle to hit the ball solidly.

If you haven’t already, you should make the hamstrings a top priority of workouts, says Chris Noss, one of the PGA Tour’s most-respected fitness trainers. He works with Camillo Villegas and Zach Johnson, to name two of his clients. In fact, starting workouts by warming up the hamstring muscles is always a good idea, since they play a key role in doing many exercises with proper form as well as avoiding injuries. “Tight and weak hamstrings often lead to back issues, not just swing flaws,” Noss says.

When you visit Myrtle Beach to take that golf vacation you have always dreamed of, you will certainly want to consider Carolina National Golf Course. It is a splendid course, in a great location that will provide you with a complete golfing experience filled with both fun and challenging holes.

Carolina National is a magnificent 4.5 star rated, 27 hole golf course that was designed by Fred Couples. With 27 holes, you will have approximately 135 tee placements to play from, giving you countless variations. Each of the nines are named after native waterbirds: Egret, Heron, and Ibis. For you bird lovers out there, the course is actually recognized and certified as an Audubon Sanctuary. Not only will you have the chance to play some great golf, but also witness some majestic scenery and remarkable wildlife. The course also boasts some 300 to 400 year old oak trees that are truly amazing. Each of the nines are fairly on par with one another in terms of difficulty. Make sure you make an entire day of it on the course, and play the full 27 holes, because you won’t regret it!

Here is a description of the course from their website:

Carolina National Golf Club is a 27-hole Fred Couples signature golf facility set along the Lockwood Folly River. Winding through rich low country terrain, the course offers an endless variety of playing experiences. It has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the finest courses on the eastern seaboard, and is conveniently located in Brunswick County, between Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC.

Carolina National Golf Club is also an Audubon-Certified Sanctuary Golf Course. This honor comes with the responsibility to uphold the principles of environmental stewardship such as maintaining a refuge for wildlife and a healthy environment.

The course was designed to accommodate all skill levels through its innovative design and multiple tee placements. Just over 7,000 yards from the tips, the course will challenge the accomplished golfer, yet five sets of strategically placed tees offer an equally challenging test to golfers of all abilities.

Carolina National Golf Club has three distinctive nines; Egret, Heron and IBIS, which play in a trio of 18-hole combinations. The course was designated to accommodate all skill levels through its innovative design and multiple tee placements. Just over 7,000 yards from the tips, the course will challenge the accomplished golfer, yet five sets of strategically placed tees offer an equally challenging test to golfers abilities.

The Willard Byrd Course of the Sea Trail

This course is located in Sunset Beach, North Carolina (279 Clubhoue Road, Sunset Beach, NC 28468), and it is truly a great course to play. The course is a par of the Sea Trail, which is a beautiful collection of courses in Sunset Beach, which is only 15 minutes from Myrtle Beach. The trail provides 3 award-winning signature golf courses, including the Willard Byrd Course. Here are some basic facts on the course, and what you should expect when you play:

The Willard Byrd Course requires a distinctively different approach thanks to a constricting tree line, challenging greenside bunkering system, and lakes ranging from 14-20 acres. Strategically placed tee shots are essential for successful play on Byrd’s newly renovated undulating greens of Champions Bermuda. A picturesque and scenic 18th hole between two beautiful ponds finishes the course at the Jones-Byrd Clubhouse. The course measures 6750 yards from the blue tees; 6,251 yards from the white tees; 5,561 yards from the gold tees; and 4,697 yards from the red tees.

Year Opened: 1990

Holes: 18, Par: 72

Walking Allowed: No

Sunday Alcohol: After Noon

Coolers: Only small, 6-pack size coolers allowed

Spikes: Soft

Greens: Champions Bermuda

When you consider the Willard Byrd course, remember that they are truly known for their playability. They are not overly difficult or challenging, but always fun. You should expect wide fairways, some sand scattered throughout, and your typical dogleg holes. This course is always in great condition, and you can play all three Sea Trail courses at a very special rate. They have a great clubhouse and excellent practice facilities available. Book your next Myrtle Beach golf vacation today, and play the Willard Byrd Course!

Myrtle Beach, SC is about to get a new golf training facility that is set to open in April. Here is a excerpt from a great article from The Sun News discussing the new development:

With his playing career encore behind him, former PGA Tour member Hugh Royer III of Myrtle Beach is fully immersed in teaching again, to the point of building a comprehensive learning facility on the east side of Conway.

Royer and a few investors plan to build the South Carolina Golf Center, a driving range, practice facility and learning center on approximately 13.5 acres, with the clubhouse entrance off East Cox Ferry Road in Conway between U.S. 501 and S.C. 90.

Royer and primary investor Al Hogan are in the process of receiving the necessary zoning from Horry County and permits for the approximate $500,000 project. They hope to have them by late January to facilitate a possible opening by early April when the property’s warm-weather Bermuda grows in with the rising temperatures.

Royer and Hogan will lease the property from owner Jimmy Jordan of both J.P. Jordan & Associates and Landmax Real Estate in Conway.

“It’s something I think will work,” Royer said. “I want to create a place that gives you the best of what’s available around here practice-wise.”

A permanent 3,000-square-foot clubhouse will include a pro shop, snack bar, lounge with TVs, bathrooms, three hitting bays with TrackMan launch monitors and V1 video swing analysis software, and a swing simulator.

The pro shop will likely feature predominantly Nike merchandise. The company sponsored Royer for more than a decade of playing and teaching through 2009.

The driving range will be close to 150 yards wide and up to 375 yards deep with tees that can be moved back or forward up to 45 yards. Royer is considering lights to stay open until 10 p.m.

The range will have up to 10 covered stations with mats for use in inclement weather, and Royer plans to leave a few trees on the range for effect. A par-3 hole over a retention pond at the back of the range is being considered.

There will be a 4,000-square-foot putting green featuring Champion Bermudagrass and a pair of chipping greens with bunkers. Royer plans a number of demo days and clinics.

He said he’ll hire clubfitter and repairman Al Cloyd, formerly of the Bogeys to Birdies Golf Shop in North Myrtle Beach, and he has already chosen an assistant teaching pro. The center will have various memberships for sale.

Royer doesn’t plan to have a beer or liquor license at first. “I [eventually] want to create an atmosphere that’s comfortable,” Royer said. “[Golfers] will have every amenity they need but I also want them to feel it’s a place they can feel comfortable to come and watch a football game.”

Royer has been teaching at Burning Ridge Golf Club and intends to remain there until the center opens. His students include National Golf Association Tour – formerly Hooters Tour – members Patrick Lundy of Little River and Paul Cormack of Scotland, and he wants to help produce stronger pro and amateur players from the area. “I want to create better players from Myrtle Beach,” he said.

He also wants the facility to be a base for younger players for a minimal cost. He said he’s spoken to Aynor golf coach Patrick Wilkinson about his team using the facility, and intends to speak to Myrtle Beach and Conway coaches and representatives of the Coastal Carolina University Professional Golf Management Program.

In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, courses and tours can come and go. We like to keep you up to date on developments related to popular tours and course changes that take place throughout the grand strand. Here is an update on the NGA tour for 2012 from the Sun News:

As operators of the National Golf Association Hooters Tour continue to search for a title sponsor for 2012, they have formulated a business model that can get it through a season without one. The Grand Strand-based tour will be known as the National Golf Association Professional Golf Tour in 2012 and it will be staging one of its national pro series tournaments in the Myrtle Beach area for the first time in five years. The tournament is set for Aug. 23-26, and tour president and majority owner Robin Waters of Loris expects to name the host course in the next couple months.

The NGA Tour staged an event on the Strand for 14 consecutive years and 18 out of 19 seasons through an event at River Hills Golf & Country Club in 2007. The Strand event will be one of 18 tournaments, down from 20 events in 2011. Fourteen events will have $150,000 guaranteed purses with maximum 156-player fields. Those are down from $200,000 purses and maximum fields of 168 players last year. Four of those events remain in 2012.

Player entry fees have been dropped from $1,150 to $925 for the majority of events, and the annual membership fee remains $2,000. “What we have in place now, we know this model works,” Waters said. “These are contingency plans we’ve had in place. With the economy and everything else we knew there were going to be some challenges going forward.”

Waters said IMG Worldwide has been contracted to assist the tour. IMG is a diverse company that represents numerous pro golfers, operates tournaments and connects brands to marketing opportunities. “They’re helping us in terms of consulting, guidance and advisement,” Waters said.

Hooters has been the tour’s title sponsor since 1994 but its agreement ends Dec. 31. The tour is seeking both title and presenting sponsors, and the model could be altered if one or both are found. In 2011, Naturally Fresh Foods, another company owned by the estate of former Hooters Chief Executive Officer Bob Brooks, was the presenting sponsor. Waters said the tour has commitments from mid-level sponsors, but tour operators continue to negotiate with other companies with the help of IMG. Mid-level sponsors in 2011 included Bridgestone Golf, Michelob Ultra and Pepsi. “We have some options and we’re evaluating those,” Waters said. “… Maybe one of those [smaller sponsors] will be the title sponsor.” (Sun News)
