Myrtle Beach Golf Packages in your own town

Last weekend, I invited my best friend growing up down to enjoy the spoils of some of the best golf courses that Myrtle Beach has to offer.  We learned the game of golf together and spent many days together at our local course growing up.

Times have changed and many years have gone by, but we both still love golf.  Despite the temperatures consistently being in the mid nineties and extremely humidity, we were able to play 6 rounds of golf at some of the finest Myrtle Beach Golf Courses over the past 3 days.

The line up was as follows:

Friday AM Leopard’s Chase

Friday PM Tiger’s Eye

Saturday AM Long Bay

Saturday PM Farmstead

Sunday AM / PM Carolina National …all 27 holes.

Despite being the hotest weekend of the year, we managed to go back and forth and had competitive matches with each other the entire weekend.

As for the golf courses, it is amazing how good of shape they are in this time of year.  The rough especially was lush, which made for some challenges recovery shots.  Each Course was different in style and design and enabled me to show my friend the diversity of courses that Myrtle Beach has to offer.

Being that I live in the Myrtle Beach area, and play frequently I’m still amazed at the vast number and variety of courses the area offers.

Buying golf equipment on your golf package

While on your next Myrtle Beach Golf package you may want to plan on doing a little shopping. Myrtle Beach is a great place to buy golf equipment and accessories. There are two great super stores and an array of small golf shops scattered everywhere. Golf Dimensions and Martins PGA Super Store are the two major stores and they are loaded with anything and everything golf related. I have utilized both stores for different aspects. Martins has a 30 day “play em bring em back policy” ( this is a 30 day policy for store credit, keep that receipt) I know we have all purchased clubs that just didn’t work right, some times they just don’t make them right! Now you have an opportunity to test drive some clubs. If your here for a golf package you can try the new Taylor Made Driver on Monday and if doesn’t work try a Callaway on Tuesday! You can also do this with iron sets , hybrids and even used clubs. I love used clubs. I currently use a $29.00 Callaway Steel Head 3 , I love for long fairway shots, that I got at Martins and a $40.00 used Nike Hybrid 4, I love for long approach shots, that I got at MacFrugals. These two clubs never come out of my bag, not bad for $80.00! There are so many frustrated golfers living here that the used club section is always full. Golf Dimensions runs great specials and also has a ton of used clubs and close out items. Look for Golf Dimensions 10% off coupon in the tourist booklets you see ever where. Don’t rule out the smaller stores, they also have great hidden gems! If you want more information on shopping in Myrtle Beach or need directions to these stores , give us a call, we are happy to help.

Myrtle Beach Golf History lesson

The courses south of Myrtle Beach are in our plantation area of the beach. Going back in time to the early 1700′s thru early 1800′s,plantations grew rice and indigo plants. Both of these plants need lots of low lying areas that can be flooded with water. The area south of Myrtle Beach on the Waccamaw Neck (named after our local indian tribe) has lots of marshes, swamps and low lying areas with several rivers running through it. Cypress trees grow in this type of environment as well as Palmetto trees (native S.C. palm tree) and tall Carolina pines. This area north of Georgetown and Charleston was a hotbed of insurrection during the Revolutionary War. The Swamp Fox, Francis Marion, lived and raided English troops in this area. You may remember the popular movie “The Patriot” starring Mel Gibson loosely based on Swampfox.  His second in command was Col. Peter Horry and our county is named after him.

The golf courses are called Carolina Low Country because this is the type of topography that they are located on. 400 year old cypress trees with dripping moss and heart of pines surround the fairways. Tall marsh grasses and tidal marsh basins are on many of these courses. The rice was grown in these tidal basins and gators also roam the marshes. Many of our courses are named after the plantations in this area… CaledoniaTrue Blue WedgefieldPawleys Plantation.. Willbrook…. Litchfield Plantation are just a few that come to mind. All of these courses have plenty of water in and surrounding them. The courses are quite scenic and challenging to play.  Ask about them the next time you talk to one of our resident Golfmasters.

Change can be good

While on your next Myrtle Beach Golf Package you may have to learn how to change. Here is an example; over the course of 4 or so rounds I found my self in a horrible rut with my long and mid-irons as I flared my approach shots right on every stinking shot. This was not the dreaded shank or ugly slice just a well controlled flair about 5 to 10 yards short and 5 to10 yards right. I play about 3 times a week and this hadn’t been a problem lately so what the heck was I doing?

I didn’t feel like I had changed anything regarding my swing so onward I marched hitting flair after flair after flair waiting for the “Golf Gods” to intervene and magically make my ball go straight. It never happened so I pondered my situation. I play my irons with a fairly open stance and felt like maybe I was “dipping ” just before contact and letting the club face open. I adjusted , but that didn’t work, hummm what could it be? Well maybe it an acceleration problem , or bringing my hands in too quick, but that wasn’t it either. I was sick of missing greens and at some point of desperation I switched to a closed stance just for the hell of it. This was not a slight change, I mean, I closed my stance well beyond square, this was a “night and day” change. Low and Behold I finally hit a straight iron shot with the proper distance and everything! Now this may not work for everyone and you may want to seek professional help but sometimes you just might be able to find the problem, of course, then the putter craps out , it’s always something! Well I guess the morale of the story is to not be afraid to make a radical change , because the “Golf Gods” may not around to help you out!

Tiger Woods Walks on water

We thought you golf nuts would enjoy this video of Tiger Woods walking on water. And we thought he was mortal?

Grip it and rip it in Myrtle Beach

On your next Myrtle Beach Golf Trip you may want to hit them long because it sure feels good to just bomb them down the fairway! In order to maximize this additive feeling it is best to choose a course with few obstacles to hit , like TREES! Your group may want some variety but you’ll want to play at least a few plain old “Grip it and Rip It” courses. Here are a few of my favorites: Wicked Stick, Shaftsbury Glen, Legends Heathland, Wild Wing Avocet, Wizard, Man of War, Farmstead, MBN West, Pearl West, Barefoot Fazio, and Tigers Eye just to name a few. As golf Masters we have played all of these courses and we are very adept at scheduling courses with the ” Flavor” you are looking for! Call us for your Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation, we will set up a great package tailored to your needs.

Myrtle Beach’s Best Par 3 Golf Holes

As with the par 4′s and 5′s, Par 3′s can be both scenic and challenging with length and obstacles. However the toughest par 3 at the beach is the shortest and it can be as short as 50 yards and still be very tough.

# 17 HERON POINT 193 yards up an incline with a pin behind a deep bunker 2 heads high. You can’t see the putting surface from the tee. On the left side and back of the green is a large bunker. If you go over the green or to the right of the green, you’ll be 15 feet below the green in a collection area. The green is a 2 tiered green with lots of undulation. It is very tough to hit and hold this green. Many times I have got over the high bunker in front of the green and thought I would be putting for a birdie…only to find out that the shot did not hold and I was over the green and down the hill with a 40 yard shot up a 15 foot hill to a pin that I could not see from the collection area.

# 14 GRANDE DUNES 244 yard par 3…get real. If the yardage doesn’t get you then it gets real interesting. You can see the ocean from the tee as you are on a high ridge overlooking the intercoastal waterway. In front of you down a steep incline to a large lake at the bottom with a nice waterfall. You drop 50 feet down then come back 40 feet up from the lake to the green. If the wind is blowing in from the ocean…when is it not ? then you have to hit your tee shot out over the waterway to let the wind blow you back onto the green. If the wind shifts or dies.. then look out below for boats in the waterway. Ever yell FORE at a boat when you hit to a par 3. You might get the chance at # 14. Penalty shots can come in bunches here if you do not take a drop on the other side of the lake. Grande Dunes at almost 7700 yards was Tigerized before it opened.

PART II… BEST OF THE PAR 3′s AT THE BEACH WILL BE CONTINUED IN ANOTHER BLOG
