As we are approaching the end of another year, we find it relevant and valuable to look back over the past year and take note some what has happened with our business and in Myrtle Beach. We have greatly enjoyed supporting the Myrtle Beach Golf community, and we want to thank all of you golf fans for your continued support of our business. If you are still looking to end the year with a golf outing, give us a call today.
We started booking trips in the Fall of 1979, and 2012 will be our 34 th golf season here at the Seaside Golf Capital. We also recently added our 8th Golfmaster, GOLF TREK now has more than 125 years of combined beach golf experience from which you can draw course knowledge from.
In 2011, we added FOUR LARGE ACCOMMODATION PROPERTIES with two - 6 bedroom condos on South Ocean Blvd. in Myrtle Beach and two – 8 bedroom beach houses in North Myrtle with 3,900 sq. ft. of luxury. These are absolutely great properties and we are proud to offer them to you.
The Spring 2011 golf season was very strong especially in April and May. Golf package rounds booked were up 5 %. During the Summer, the Myrtle Beach area had 58 straight days of 100+ degree heat indexes and very little rainfall. In late August and early September, storms and hurricanes rolled up the east coast. The heavy rainfall changed our brown fairways to lush green for our Fall golfers. November is still a great month to enjoy golf in Myrtle Beach.
This past summer represents the 3rd Summer in a row of very high heat, humidity and low rainfall. If you are a cool weather grass like our BENT grass greens, it is a very harsh environment in which to survive. 7 courses gave up the good fight and changed their bent grass greens to either tif eagle, champions or mini verdi bermuda greens over this past summer. Courses making the change included Barefoot Fazio, Barefoot Norman, Lions Paw, Myrtle Beach National West, Pearl East, River Club, and Wild Wing Avocet.
We are enjoying the Fall, and looking forward to 2012. If you are looking to book a vacation for the end of the year, get in touch with us and let us help make your vacation a great memory to last for generations.
Myrtle Beach Golf courses are abundant, and it is important to keep up with course renovations when they occur as well as course names, as they are subject to change as well. One example is Quail Creek Golf Club at Coastal Carolina University, which reopened October 3, 2011. It will become the “General James Hackler Golf Course at Coastal Carolina University,” following a ceremony on November 12, 2011. The renaming comes after a comprehensive renovation over this past summer. The course will be known as “The Hackler Course” in honor of the Coastal Carolina University golf icon and benefactor, James Hackler.
General James Hackler has an extensive background in supporting Coastal Carolina University, as well as contributing to the golf program: he served on a variety of committees related to the university, and he was a part of a group through the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association that supported the PGA of America accreditation for the PGM program. In addition, he has established an endowed scholarship for the golf team through his will, and upon his passing in 2008, he left a gift of more than $900,000 to Coastal Carolina University that has been used to improve the golf program.
Hackler is also in the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame for his life of contributions and service to the golfing community. He was not only an avid supporter and contributor to the golfing community in Myrtle Beach, but a savvy businessman, who transformed the golfing business in Mytrle Beach, South Carolina. He and his partner, Buster Bryan, established the concept of the golf package business in Myrtle Beach – which is a combination of accommodations and tee times. They brought this package concept to the Grand Strand in the 1960s, and it led to whole new way of booking and planning your golf vacation in Myrtle Beach. Hackler also invested in the development of Bay Tree, Robbers Roost, Possum Trot, and the Heather Glen golf courses.
The university’s trustees voted to make the new name official, after reviewing Hacklers extensive service to the golf program and the university. It should also be noted that the Coastal Carolina University’s golf tournament, which will be played in March at DeBordieu Club, was also renamed the General Hackler Championship in 2004. Hackler has contributed in multiple ways to the university, and several years ago, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in public service.
The ceremony on November 12, will serve as a dedication ceremony to make the new name official, but it will also serve as a grand reopening celebration for the course, which received much renovation over the summer. The ceremony will include a breakfast beginning at 8 a.m., a renaming ceremony at 9 a.m., and a round of golf for invited guests who elect to try out the new course at 9:30 a.m.
Take a look at these pictures and keep this in mind next time you are on the golf course and you hear thunder….. The following are pictures of what is left over from a set of golf clubs that were struck by lightning. The person was killed. Most Myrtle Beach Golf courses have lightning warning systems, but common sense still must prevail.
A good lesson for everyone Lightning hits a golf bag !
A man got hit by lightning Monday morning on a golf course in Madison , WI . The following are pics of what was left of his bag. Read the what the policeman says, then take a look
at the pictures.
I have been a police officer for 18 yrs and have seen a lot of gruesome and disturbing scenes (if you
can imagine it, I have probably seen a variation of it) … this one was different because it hits close to home and some of us have been in this situation.
This 75 year old golfer (no pictures of him) was out on the course with 3 other retired guys for a regular weekly tee time, and the weather forecast didn’t even predict rain at 10pm the night before. They teed off and got around to the back nine when it started to rain, and when there was a little lightning way off in the distance so they headed in. They waited under a tree half way in when the rain became very heavy. When it let up a little bit three of them then continued in but one guy decided to wait it out under a 50′ pine with an overhang of 10′ while standing next to his bag.
Minutes later a lightning bolt struck his bag and push cart as he was holding onto one of his clubs killing him instantly. On the top of the first photo you will see what was left of his driver … also in a later photo are little brown clumps which used to be golf balls.
Most of the items in the bag simply disintegrated from the heat and intense initial zap – including the labels to his ping irons and Cleveland woods (which all popped off). The electricity burned holes into the bottoms of the clubs.
The strange thing is the tree under which he was standing had no sign of a lightning strike. The bolt literally went sideways under the tree to the golf clubs.
Lesson to be learned – If you are caught out on the course or water … distance yourself from anything metal OR
graphite. (Did you know that lightning rods are often made of graphite?) Put your cart 50′ away from you! When you see lightning off in the distance GO IN IMMEDIATELY-, DON’T WAIT.
We hope you take this into consideration as thunderstorms are very prevalent this time of year. After all this could also potentially ruin your annual Myrtle Beach Golf Trip. We certainly don’t want that to happen and if you follow the above advice you are going to be in good shape.

Myrtle Beach Golf received some good news according to a recent report. A survey conducted by the National Golf Foundation ranks the Myrtle Beach-area number one for quality and value in its golf courses.
Barefoot Resort was called out in the article. The courses are improving after a few tough years according to several pros. Barefoot consists of 4 courses, each one having unique challenges with meticulously manicured fairways and greens making them very pleasant to play.
Very good news for Myrtle Beach Golf.
