Myrtle Beach’s newest golf course

The PLUS ONE: After being closed for about 2 years, Eastport has reopened under new ownership and a new name: The Valley Club at Eastport. The previous ownership closed the course with the intent on redeveloping the land for residential housing. However, with the slumping real estate market and court actions by the local homeowners , those plans never materialized and the course was sold back in May 2007. The new “local” owners have put life back into the course and it reopened on December 20. The course layout remains unchanged but some improvements have been made which include the installation of new miniverde Bermuda greens. Currently, the greens are overseeded for winter play with poa trivialis to provide the “green” that most golfers want to play on. Also, nearly 800 tons of sand has been brought in to redo the bunkers. The snack bar has been opened and the pro shop has new merchandise for sale. Access to playing the course currently is just on a walk-in basis as the new owners are still in the development stage of creating golf package rates. No word on when they will be available. The Grand Opening will be scheduled after the beginning of 2009. Historically, the course was mainly used in package play as either the first round for warm up or included as a lower priced course to allow the golf budget dollars to be used for higher end courses. The game plan is likely to be same going forward.

The MINUS ONE: The Grand Strand has lost its most southern golf course - Wedgefield Plantation Golf and Country Club. Current ownership has closed the course and is looking for a buyer. The course has had many owners over the last decade. Most notably, new ownership in August 2004 reopened the course in January 2005 with a ton of improvements including a lot of drainage work. Even the old Carriage House on this old rice plantation was restored. It changed hands again about 2 years ago. The course has struggled with gaining recognition and play over the years. It had many excellent holes and had challenging length but didn’t have the draw for golfers visiting the Grand Strand.

Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap

Myrtle Beach was again the proud host of the annual World Am golf tournament in August 2008. We look forward to participates playing our courses again in 2009.

Participants compete for the right to be crowned “World Amateur Golf Champion” and to win some of the more than $250,000 in prizes given away at the tournament. Players are flighted according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the 72-holes, flight winners advance to the 18-hole world championship playoff at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
.
Each evening after tournament play, participants and their guests attend the “World’s Largest 19th Hole” at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center which includes an extensive golf exposition, equipment demos, entertainment, open bars, prize drawings and food from Myrtle Beach’s best restaurants.
