We offer free golf clinics, monthly scrambles, and recently we hosted a combined fishing/golf tournament.

2. What is your best round on your course?  Best round ever?

My best round at Woodland Valley was a 77; my best round ever, a 68 at Beachwood Golf Club.

3. Hobbies, other than golf?

Other than golf, I have many interests. I enjoy fishing, watching all sports, cooking, and gardening.

4. Dream golf 4-some?

Oh, my dream 4-some would be myself, Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, and Michelle Wie.

5. How many years have you been in the golf business?

20 years.

6. Where are you from originally?

Although I was born on Okinawa, I consider myself a native of the Conway/Myrtle Beach area. I’ve lived here since 1971.

7. What is the strangest thing that happened on your course recently?

It was so strange. Recently a fisherman caught an alligator, but previously we had absolutely no sightings of any gators on the course!

8. What makes your course stand out compared to the other 100 MB golf courses?

Woodland Valley Country Club stands out because of the value it offers, the quality of service provided to all our golfers, and the superb manner in which the course is maintained and groomed.

9. How long have you worked at your golf club?

I’ve been here one and a half years.

10. What is the biggest challenge your course faces this year?

This year, it’s the slumping economy. It hurts us and all the courses.

12. Have you played competitively?

I have not played competitively recently, but my best Carolinas PGA sanctioned tournament score was 74.

13. What course improvements have you undergone in the past year or what improvements are you considering?

We have added a practice chipping green and are considering the addition of a practice sand bunker.

14. What general trends are you seeing in the golf industry in Myrtle Beach?

With some courses closing, displaced golfers must play elsewhere and are looking for a good value. Woodland Valley offers that value; we are very competitive.

Golf Club that doubles as a urinal

This one of the funniest things, I’ve seen in a while.  For those that like to consume some cold beverages while enjoying our Myrtle Beach Golf Courses, this is the perfect solution.  If there is no restroom in sight.  This fake golf club doubles as a urinal.

While I must admit, I’ve never seen anything of this nature…one thing is for sure is that I would not want to borrow this person’s golf club.

Check it out.

Springmaid Beach Resort Upgrades

Springmaid Beach Resort has undergone a number of improvements over the past year.  We think the improvement make it that much more attractive to the Myrtle Beach Golfer.

Room improvements—during 2009, 95% of the rooms have received fresh paint and flat screen televisions, as well as the installation of free wireless in all rooms.

Hospitality Suites—Springmaid offers extra large rooms that can be used for small meetings or gatherings. Groups of 15+ rooms will automatically get one upgrade to a suite, based on availability.

Larger Units—we have a limited number of two-bedroom (three beds) and three-bedroom units (5 beds), as well as a Beach House (five beds) that offers five bedrooms, living/dining area, full kitchen, two baths, and an enclosed patio with a gas grill. All of these units are priced and sold based on availability and occupancy.

Bar Area—A small bar/lounge area has been added to Springmaid Pier Café. Beer, wine & liquor are available as well as two flat screen TVs. Continued improvements to the Cafe are planned.

Myrtle Beach Golf Facts

Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations• Did you know that a divot that is not repaired with sand takes at least 3 weeks to heal?

• Did you know a ball mark that is not repaired takes over a month to heal – a ball mark that is repaired heals in 24 hours.

• Keep these facts in mind next time you play.  Just imagine the upkeep to the Myrtle Beach Golf Courses as they play over 200 people per day.

Meet the River Oaks Resort General Manager

Myrtle Beach Golf CoursesName:   Scott Clayton

Position: General Manager, River Oaks Golf Plantation

1. What new and exciting has been going on at your course?

We are excited about the renovations of the Otter Course, which are now complete, and those that are in progress at the Fox.

2. What is your best round on your course?  Best round ever?

My best round at River Oaks is 80. My best round ever recorded is 70.

3. Hobbies, other than golf?

I love fishing, and I live in a wonderful area for that!

4. Dream golf 4-some?

My dream golf 4-some would consist of Carl Yazstremski, Larry Bird, Tom Brady (I’m a lifetime Boston sports enthusiast.) and me.

5. How many years have you been in the golf business?

I’ve been in the golf business for 12 years.

6. Where are you originally from?

I grew up in Hartford, Connecticut.

7. What is the strangest thing that happened on your course recently?

There were four holes-in-ones on four different holes in a two-day period. Wow.

8. What makes your course stand out compared to the other 100 MB golf courses?

We offer quality golf at value pricing. Our proximity to the airport and major hotels allows us to be popular for arrival and getaway play tee times

9. How long have you worked at your golf club?

I’ve been here for six months.

10. What is the biggest challenge your course faces this year?

The uncertain economy challenges us and everyone here in the Myrtle Beach area.

11. Describe your signature holes, and how to play them?

The ninth on the Bear Course is a great hole. It’s a challenging par 5, with a tantalizing approach shot over water to a well bunkered green. Shorter hitters may play to the left side of the fairway and avoid the carry-over the water. Signature holes on Otter #8 and Fox #6 also require decision making tee and approach shots.

12. Have you played competitively?

No

13. What course improvements have you undergone in the past year, or what improvements are you considering?

We have removed numerous trees and sand traps, installed new cart paths, drainage, and irrigation systems on the Fox and Otter Courses. The same improvements are scheduled for The Bear Course. Major improvements are scheduled  for our pro-shop and our food and beverage areas, too.

14. What general trends are you seeing in the golf industry in Myrtle Beach?

Golfers are interested in getting more for their money .

Non Stop Flights from Toronto to Myrtle Beach to begin Soon

As reported in TheSunNews.com on November 5, 2009, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and airport representatives are in final negotiations with Toronto, Ontario-based Porter Airlines to begin offering non-stop flights from Toronto to Myrtle Beach as early as February 28, 2010. Canadians love Myrtle Beach and suddenly it will be only two hours away.
These international flights will save time, the frustration of changing planes and money. Many times, direct flights are less expensive.
If everything goes as planned, travelers should be able to book flights between Myrtle Beach International Airport and Toronto Island Airport online by November 9. Porter Airlines was founded in 2006. It serves eight Canadian cities and has service to Chicago, New York and Boston.
We’ll keep you posted as further details become available, but this seems like the perfect flight for those interested in Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations!
