Myrtle Beach Golf Packages in your own town

Last weekend, I invited my best friend growing up down to enjoy the spoils of some of the best golf courses that Myrtle Beach has to offer.  We learned the game of golf together and spent many days together at our local course growing up.

Times have changed and many years have gone by, but we both still love golf.  Despite the temperatures consistently being in the mid nineties and extremely humidity, we were able to play 6 rounds of golf at some of the finest Myrtle Beach Golf Courses over the past 3 days.

The line up was as follows:

Friday AM Leopard’s Chase

Friday PM Tiger’s Eye

Saturday AM Long Bay

Saturday PM Farmstead

Sunday AM / PM Carolina National …all 27 holes.

Despite being the hotest weekend of the year, we managed to go back and forth and had competitive matches with each other the entire weekend.

As for the golf courses, it is amazing how good of shape they are in this time of year.  The rough especially was lush, which made for some challenges recovery shots.  Each Course was different in style and design and enabled me to show my friend the diversity of courses that Myrtle Beach has to offer.

Being that I live in the Myrtle Beach area, and play frequently I’m still amazed at the vast number and variety of courses the area offers.

You know you’ve had too many beers on the golf course when…

A man in Wisconsin, is accused of driving drunk after trying to use a golf cart to drive home nearly 40 miles away from the golf course where he had been drinking beer. The Sheriff’s Department said Monday that the 47-year-old man told deputies his relatives had left him behind at the Kettle Hills Golf Course outside Milwaukee Saturday.

So, logically he got in a golf cart and headed for home.

Someone called the sheriff’s department to report an intoxicated man on a golf cart driving on the highway. Deputies caught up with the man about a mile from the golf course.

He told investigators he had consumed 10 beers, but didn’t think he was intoxicated.  Keep this in mind next time you or your buddy things he can take the cart home from your next round at a Myrtle Beach Golf Course.

Consider this next time you are searching for golf balls.

Golf Nuts, check out the below article we just received.  Not sure if this is true or not…but it makes for a good story.  This allegedly did not happen at a course in the Myrtle Beach area, however it makes one think twice before searching around in the woods too long.

Here is an excerp.

A startling discovery on a local golf course in Upstate SC on Monday. While searching for golf balls, a weekly endeavor a man thought  he had stepped on a rotten fallen tree limb. “it kinda smushed under my boot and I didn’t think much of it, til it began to move.” The huge reptile revealed itself from beneath the ground cover yielding an Eastern Diamond Back Rattler that is believed to be the largest of its kind ever discovered in the United States . Weighing in at a 97 lbs and 9 feet, 1 inch – it is the biggest rattler found since Ross Allen captured one in 1969 that measured 9 feet, 1 inch but only weighed 76 lbs. Beau is awaiting the final results on his record setting capture from the South Carolina Game Wardens office. The Game Wardens office spent some time Monday afternoon surveying the area with moderate concern for the existence of additional Diamond Backs of this size. “A bite sustained from a snake of this size could be fatal due to the large amount of venom this animal produces.” The discovery was made in a creek bed that runs between the 14th and 15th holes on Willow Creek Golf Course.

Myrtle Beach Direct Air considers more flights

In a move that will help bolster getting more golfers to Myrtle Beach.  Myrtle Beach Direct Air announced that it will be extending it’s twice weekly flights from Springfield, Il to Myrtle Beach through November.  Originally it was only scheduled through September.  In addition the carrier is eyeing routes to Florida during the winter months.

In addition, they have announced a 50% off fare sale.  You can get a flight between Springfield and Myrtle Beach for $98 each way.  Now that sure beats driving to Myrtle Beach!

Being a new air carrier has it’s challenges, but it seems the demand for air travel to Myrtle Beach is growing and the move should help get golfers to Myrtle Beach with less cost and eliminate the drive at the same time.

Rivers Edge to convert to Paspalum Greens

After at least a couple years of deliberation one of Myrtle Beach’s best golf courses, in Rivers Edge, has temporarily closed to replace their greens.

Being perhaps the most picturesque golf course in the Myrtle Beach area, Rivers Edge is 2nd to none.  The close proximity to the salt marshes and ocean made it extremely difficult to keep the bent grass greens in optimum condition 12 months a year.  The bent grass was great during the winter and spring season, however the heat of the summer, combined with the proximity to all that salt water made keeping the greens tough.

As of June 1st, 2009 the course has closed to replace the greens with the latest in turf technology.  Paspalum has been used in many southern climates and is very salt water resistent.  Seeing as Rivers Edge is almost completely on the marsh and in close proximity to the ocean, Paspalum is a great choice.  They have had a practice putting green with Paspalum up there for over a year, and it always looks great.  It is our hope that all 18 holes will be in great shape with this change.

The course should be back open by late August or early September and ready for the fall golf season.  This is a course that is not to be missed.  One of our favorites for sure here at Golf Trek.

Tidewater Golf Club to make much needed improvements

Tidewater has always been known as one of the most scenic golf courses in all of Myrtle Beach. They just announced they will be closing for 4-6 weeks to make some much needed improvements to the course. This past spring the course struggled with some of it’s conditioning, especially on it’s tee boxes. They plan to completely renovate the tee boxes to bring the course back up to the reputation and splendor it deserves. In addition to the tee boxes, drainage and some erosion control work is planned.

We are excited to see that Tidewater is taking the big step of closing to make all the necessary changes. It’s a short term loss, but definitely a long term gain. Tidewater has always been one of the top courses in Myrtle Beach and perenially on Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses you can play.  The course should be back open by August 1st.

Arcadian Shores under new management

Arcadian Shores golf course in Myrtle Beach is now under new management with a local company expanding the number of courses they manage.  Burroughs & Chapin which manages a handful of other local courses has taken over the day to day operations of Arcadian Shores.

Previously Arcadian Shores was managed by the Hilton hotel, which is adjacent to the property.

Arcadian Shores is a Rees Jones design.  Burroughs & Chapin indicated they are in the process of formulating a short term and long term plan for the course.  Planned upgrades are part of the decision making process.  Arcadian shores is conveniently located just off the ocean in Myrtle Beach.

Best 18 holes in myrtle beach

Over the past 2 weeks a variety of different golfers from owners to designers rated the best 18 holes on the Grand Strand. Votes were cast based upon the degree of difficulty, best design features and the scenic beauty of the hole. 56 courses were represented in the overall vote. Of the 1800 holes on the Grand Strand reaching from Georgetown, SC to Bald Head Island, NC, 18 final holes were chosen. It did not matter whether they were par 5′s, par 4′s or par 3′s and of course the par 6 at Farmstead.

The course with the most nominated holes is one of my favorites and Pete Dye’s best at the beach. Many of you golf nuts have probably played it as it is in the center beach. The course was a private country club for many years and unavailable for resort play. 9 holes were nominated out of their 18 holes as the best holes at the beach. The course….Prestwick Country Club. I have been telling my golf nuts that Prestwick has the most signature holes of any course at the beach. It’s a choice I would recommend over and over again.

Many of Dye’s courses at the beach are tricked up in some manner. However Prestwick is on a natural dune field about 1/2 mile from the ocean and has a natural beauty with a variety of challenging holes. Waste bunkers, pot bunkers, elevated greens, moguls, large undulating greens and big lakes make Prestwick a challenge for all level of skills. These features combined with length and prevailing ocean breezes makes for a fun day of crafting a variety of shots to make par.
